The door of The Daily Picture offices slammed behind them as Lil darted out into the street. Mei and Billy were following close at her heels but they could scarcely keep up with her as she raced up busy Fetter Lane, through the twisting back streets to Chancery Lane, across sedate squares and green lawns, and at last to the grand old buildings of the Inns of Court and the offices of the Secret Service Bureau.

As she ran, Lil’s thoughts were racing too. It was Brooks! The double agent at the Bureau was Brooks. He was the one that Joe had seen passing secret information to the woman from The Daily Picture – the smart woman in the navy-blue suit. No wonder he’d been poking around at Taylor & Rose, asking difficult questions!

‘Clarke & Sons!’ she called to the elderly concierge, not even waiting for a reply before she went on past him, charging straight up the stairs. Billy and Mei were still behind her; she could hear the clattering of their boots. They’d never been here before – after all, only the official Bureau agents were supposed to know about the office’s location, but that scarcely seemed to matter now.

She flung open the door with a bang, making Carruthers, who had been sitting at his desk poring over his paperwork, leap to his feet at once.

‘Lil!’ he exclaimed. For a split second, he looked delighted to see her, but then as he saw her dashing towards the Chief’s door, he leaped forward and grabbed her arm. ‘What do you think you’re doing? The Chief’s in a meeting – you can’t just rush in! And what are you even doing here? You’re supposed to be in Venice!’

But Lil shook him off. ‘I know who it is!’ she burst out. ‘The double agent! We’ve found him!’

‘Shh! Shh!’ Carruthers looked from Lil to Billy and Mei, neither of whom he had ever met before. His expression was aghast. ‘What are you playing at?’ he demanded furiously.

But Lil ignored him. She was already darting towards the door of the Chief’s office, and now she threw it open without knocking. Inside, she found the Chief and Captain Forsyth deep in conversation.

‘I say!’ exclaimed Forsyth in astonishment as Lil charged in. ‘Hullo, old girl! What are you doing here?’

‘I’m sorry, sir – I couldn’t stop her!’ exclaimed Carruthers, rushing in behind Lil, followed by Billy and Mei, who were certainly not going to be left out now.

‘Miss Rose?’ asked the Chief mildly, a little surprised but rather interested in this sudden interruption. ‘I had understood you were away with Miss Taylor but I see that is not the case. Can I – er – help you with something?’

‘I know who it is!’ Lil exclaimed at once. She knew there was no need to be hush-hush in front of Forsyth or anyone else any longer. ‘The double agent passing secrets out of the Bureau – it’s Mr Brooks!’

There was a long pause. The Chief took off his spectacles and looked at her.
